Activities of the Student Union of the Academy of Arts and Culture in Osijek

The Student Union of the University of Josip Juraj Strossmayer in Osijek and the Academy of Arts and Culture in Osijek have closely cooperated for many years on student activities and projects. The Student Union recognises the quality and significance of the artistic and cultural expression of the students of the Academy of Arts and Culture in Osijek, it helps young artists achieve recognition and supports every project that cultivates the image of the University. The projects carried out in cooperation with the Academy of Arts and Culture in Osijek are a great cultural contribution to both the University and Osijek as a student city.

In order to present the artistic and cultural production to a wider audience, the following projects have been completed over the past few years:

International Student Wood Carving Workshop “Jarčevac”

Using and carving wood has always accompanied human existence. Wood and wood products have played a significant part throughout human history. Since its prehistoric and ritual origins, the artistic carving of wood has greatly contributed to the art and culture of humanity. The idea behind this workshop is to promote the art of wood carving as well as the contemporary wood carving techniques among the students of fine arts. The workshop dates back to 2009. At that time, it was a field study of sculpture for students of the 3rd year of the Department of Fine Arts of the Academy of Arts in Osijek. The International Student Wood Carving Workshop “Jarčevac” has developed into a respectable event. Over the past few years, it has started to attract guests from the regional academies of fine arts.

Before attending the workshop in Jarčevac, mentors and professional loggers teach students how to create sculptures of considerable dimensions. With their chainsaws and other equipment, loggers help students create sculptures and provide us with the indispensable oak and linden logs. The workshop takes place every autumn (after the mosquito season) in the forest of Jarčevac which is located approximately 20 km from Osijek, in the vicinity of the settlement of Petrijevci near Valpovo. This small forest stretches along the Drava, creating a suitable habitat for many plants and animals as well as an inspiring environment for creative work. Students share an authentic living and work space. The goal of the workshop is not just to teach young people about the artistic carving of wood, but also to provide a meeting place for all the students and mentors from the region who can learn about nature, natural resources and the ecosystem of the forest. The results of the workshop include new sculptures, the acquired wood carving knowledge and skills as well as the development of social intelligence and motivation using the medium of sculpture. Wood carving is highly demanding and the experience provided by this workshop boosts the self-confidence of students, preparing them for future challenges and experiments with any material used in sculpture. Also, students define their aesthetic and artistic concepts, acquiring the knowledge about wood, tools and protection of this material.

Ut pictura poesis - An Art Book

“Ut pictura poesis” is an art book which includes 35 visual and 35 textual creations. The book balances the medium of the image with the medium of the text, giving equal importance to both - hence the title “Ut pictura poesis” (used by Horace, “as painting is, so is poetry”). The images and texts were created by Kristina Penava during the 3rd year of the undergraduate study of fine arts, the academic year of 2017/2018, under the mentorship of professor Hrvoje Duvnjak. Next academic year, during the 1st year of the graduate study of illustration, she converts them to a book form.

My Soul, Weave Me a Sevdah Song

It is a graduate exam of the students of the 2nd year of the graduate study of acting and puppetry. Each soul weaves its own tale. The entangled threads of our lives create a tight knot of love. True love which is constant, yet interwoven differently. Although we run away from it, cling to it, hide it, twist it, unravel it, tear it apart, we are destined to be enveloped in it. The threads of our souls are like the strings of a lyre, while our hearts sing the songs of our live - always the same, yet different. The play was performed at the 10th Puppetry Biennial in Bugojno where it was recognised as a ground-breaking puppet play that contributed to the development of puppetry in the region.

Young Theatre Festival

The Young Theatre Festival is organised in September in the town of Bale in the County of Istria. The festival includes the international cultural cooperation between artists from the Republic of Croatia, the Federal Republic of Germany, the Republic of Italy, the Republic of Austria and the United States of America. It is organised in cooperation with the Academy of Arts and Culture in Osijek, the Faculty of Food Technology in Osijek, the Municipality of Bale and the Tourist Association of the Town of Bale, Mon Perin Foundation, Mon Perin Citizens’ Association and the Italian Community of Bale. Mon Perin, an association of citizens, led by a clear vision and goals, has achieved significant growth and results, improving the quality of life in Bale and Istria. In order to boost the creative energy, Mon Perin and its partners gather professionals with different knowledge and skills who cooperate and participate in the cultural life of the town of Bale. Also, the Young Theatre Festival should encourage an international cultural cooperation between various universities and promote theatrical production. The infrastructure has to be improved in order to hold workshops and stage performances as well as to carry out the ambient theatre programmes such as the Young Theatre Festival and the cultural practice of the students of the European theatre, fine arts and music academies. The best location is Fort Forno, not far from the camping resort “Mon Perin”. This distance is ideal for those participating in the rehearsals and workshops because they will not disturb the guests of the camping resort and the guest will not disturb them. Using theatre which is based on multiculturalism and creative dialogue, the festival encourages the cultural dialogue between artists and the general public. Mon Perin and its partners wish to maintain the growth; provide more cultural and tourist activities; connect people, ideas and creations; encourage life-long learning; celebrate cultural and historical heritage which reminds artists that originality leads to excellence and that, in turn, improves the quality of life.

International Puppetry Revue “Lutkokaz”

The Academy of Arts and Culture in Osijek is proud to be the first and only puppetry school in Croatia - at the Department of Theatre, students study puppetry as well as acting. During the 6th semester, students prepare independent projects for the final exam in puppetry. Prompted by the quality and maturity of these exam plays as well as by their success at festivals in the country and abroad, the Academy has decided to organise a revue of the best puppet plays presented at the exam so that the general public could see and enjoy them. The revue therefore discovers young talent since these performances are staged by young people for young people and adults, which is rarely the case in Croatian puppetry. Also, it presents the study of acting and puppetry, making it more popular. The revue includes puppet plays, lectures and exhibitions which represent the activities of other academies - each year, one international academy. Puppetry workshops are held by teachers from other academies for our students while our teachers teach foreign students. The revue also organises international scientific and professional meetings which encourage the following: the scientific study of puppetry; better quality and efficiency of higher education and scientific research; improved communication between students, teachers, theatre scholars and critics, scientists and puppeteers - actors, directors and stage designers.

International Festival “Art and Woman”

In 2016, the Academy of Arts and Culture in Osijek has organised the first international festival entitled “Art and Woman” which presented the accomplishments of female artists from Croatia and abroad in the broad context of artistic practice - literature, music, theatre, dance. The goal of the festival is to create the platform for artistic interpretations of artworks made by women as well as those which deal with the topic of the woman in the broadest artistic, cultural, social, ethical, political and purely biological context - or multiple identities that determine the (contemporary) woman. The concept of the festival is based on the interdisciplinary approach to artistic creation which includes literature, music, fine and performing arts as well as the new media in the broadest sense: from the presentation of the intimate approach to artistic creation to the radical, loud, engaged and determined achievements of female art. This festival deals with women in art and female artists in order to acknowledge the multiple identities of the woman without confronting the female creative expression with the male one. Instead, the aim is to emphasise those characteristics which are predominantly found in the artistic creation of women. Therefore, the festival addresses the general public in order to abolish marginalisation of the woman not only in artistic and cultural life, but also in the formation of the whole society by establishing dialogue among artists, scientists and the consumers of cultural production, pupils, students and teachers. The interdisciplinary approach adequately portrays the diversity of identities and roles that define every woman. Due to this approach, the artists and the public negate the porous boundary between artistic creation and the art of living.

Interlinking Student Journalism in Southeastern Europe

A team of the students of the 2nd year of the graduate study of media culture of the Academy of Arts and Culture in Osijek, accompanied by their mentor Tomislav Levak, an assistant at the Department of Culture, Media and Management of the Academy of Arts and Culture in Osijek, visited Belgrade from 15th to 18th December 2019. The visit was part of the international project entitled “Interlinking Student Journalism in Southeastern Europe”. That achieved the main goal of the project: to establish international cooperation between the students of the Academy in Osijek and the students of the Faculty of Political Sciences in Belgrade who study media, journalism and communication or work in the publishing and media industries. During their stay, the students and their mentor visited Belgrade and the Golubac Fortress where they produced a few media reports. At the Faculty of Political Sciences in Belgrade, they met professor and vice-dean Veselin Kljajić, PhD, who told them about the organisation and activities of the institution. Then, they attended a lecture about journalism by assistant professor Milica Jevtić Kulić, PhD. They learned about “Politikolog”, a journal providing political analyses, and the Media Centre with a radio station and a studio for filming and editing. The students of the Academy presented the publishing industry in Osijek, i.e. journals such as “Sveučilišni glasnik”, “Notan” and “Artos”. That laid a foundation for future cooperation between the Academy for Arts and Culture in Osijek and the Faculty of Political Sciences in Belgrade. The acquired knowledge and experience as well as the media reports were presented to the students of media culture in Osijek at the workshop held on 13th January 2020 at the Academy.

Preparation and Publishing of “Notan”, a Student Journal of the Academy of Arts and Culture in Osijek

“Notan”, the e-journal of the students of the former Department of Cultural Studies and now the Academy of Arts and Culture in Osijek was founded by the Department of Cultural Studies and its students and mentors. It was the result of the communication between the students and professors of the Department, mostly at seminars and workshops. There seemed to be a need for a relevant and visible platform that would ensure the publication of the best student papers, those that could become scientific papers and other creative texts written by students. Also, by working as editors, writing and publishing papers as well as participating in the interdisciplinary cooperation, students gained experience of practical work and recognition as young scientific/theoretical authors. That type of student support improved the quality of their study as well as their future academic and cultural/critical work.

Student Workshop of Serigraphy

Over the past ten years, Osijek has turned into a significant centre of art. Printmaking in Osijek has become a topic of conversation, especially its printmaking “school” which is closely related to the work of the Academy of Arts and Culture in Osijek. In order to encourage further development of printmaking at the Academy of Arts and Culture in Osijek and ensure competitive advantage over other academies in Croatia, students have the opportunity to participate in a workshop that includes seven days of intensive work and learning under the mentorship of associate professor Mario Čaušić and assistant Krunoslav Dundović. Students will learn about serigraphy and acquire valuable experience, knowledge and skills. By organising an exhibition at the Kazamat Gallery, students will come into contact with exhibition curators and members of the Croatian Association of Artists in Osijek and learn about the organisation and coordination of exhibitions as well as the presentation of artworks, which will reinforce their notion of “the world of art” and enable independent and excellent presentation of art.

The Final Exhibition of the Students of the Department of Visual and Media Arts

The Final Exhibition of the Students of the Department of Visual and Media Arts of the Academy of Arts and Culture in Osijek traditionally takes place at the end of each academic year on the premises of the Department of Visual and Media Arts at the University Campus.

The students of the Department of Visual and Media Arts exhibit their works (paintings, sculptures, prints, multimedia works) which they have created during the academic year. The intensive programme lasts four days and the exhibition is open to the general public for a month. It offers an insight into different aspects of our work: from the primary function of providing higher education to a display of the creativity of students and the final artworks of the graduate students. Each student is represented by at least one of their works.
