Abstract

The importance of conveying relevant information in the media on environmental
topics (regarding climate, temperature, sustainability etc.) represents primacy in informing
the public, given that the consequences of the same are reflected on human
lives and, as such, on human rights in general. The information transmitted in the
media promote raising public awareness of environmental issues with the aim of
preserving the quality of life. Media portals, as representatives of the media, quickly
convey information to the public and thus contribute to the formation of public opinion
and the preservation of human rights to timely and relevant information. The
basic task of portals is to present contents that will convey true information. During
crises, potential crises and accidents, the media become the most important source of
information for citizens and have the task of presenting timely, objective and accurate
information. The aim of this paper is to investigate how internet portals approached
the reporting of an event prefixed as an event that potentially had an impact on the
environment and residents, and how much they contributed to the formation of public
opinion. Using the method of thematic analysis of the content, a sample of 150
articles on nine media portals (national and local level) was included. The results of
the research provide an insight into how internet portals approached the reporting of
an event with an implication of a possible impact on the environment. This research
indicates the importance of environmental awareness of the public and the need for
reporting on environmental problems and crises in the media space.
