Invitation to authors

The journal of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Tuzla, Društvene i humanističke studije, is planning to publish a July 2024 issue with the topic THE SOCIAL SCIENCES AND HUMANITIES ASPECTS OF LIFE IN COMMUNITIES (UN)SAFE FROM VIOLENCE.

Violence, as an increasingly pronounced form of deviant behavior in the modern world, takes on new forms, methods, and techniques. In unsafe communities, members often face significant challenges related to physical and psychological well-being, social cohesion, and overall quality of life. High levels of violence can lead to fear, mistrust, alienation, and social isolation among community members, affecting the general sense of security and their mental health. On the other hand, secure communities tend to foster a sense of belonging, trust, and cooperation among their members, contributing to improved mental and emotional well-being. Understanding the social sciences and humanities dimensions of security and violence is a key academic contribution to creating communities where individuals can lead fulfilling and secure lives, and a synchronized, collective response to all forms of violence is imperative to living in communities. Starting from this, it is, therefore, necessary, from a scientific perspective, to contribute to the illumination of violence as a complex, multidimensional social problem, and, with the participation of authors from various scientific fields, to offer effective solutions, views, and approaches, as well as research results, whose practical application can improve prevention of violence. Motivated by the need for further advancement and development of science in accordance with new advances and achievements, DHS, as a journal that insists on interdisciplinarity, selected this topic in order to provide colleagues, researchers, with the opportunity to focus on complex issues of the humanities and social sciences in areas that a socially responsible academic community must not bypass. Although contributions can cover a wide range of topics, we are particularly interested in papers dealing with the following subtopics:

  • Legal aspects of violence in communities (un)safe from violence
  • The impact of violence on social cohesion and community ties
  • Psychological well-being and mental health of residents of (un)secure communities
  • School, education system, and social work in the function of violence prevention
  • The role of local institutions, community leaders, and governance in building community safety
  • Human rights and dignity in communities (un)safe from violence
  • The influence of traditional and digital media on the framing of the perception of violence and safety
  • Thematization of the problem of violence and security in works of art (literature, film, theater, syncretic art forms…)
  • Linguistic aspects of verbal violence
